Specific admission requirements

There are no specific admission requirements in the Degree Program in Live Performance Engineering. All qualified applicants who have passed the three-year upper secondary education or vocational upper secondary education are eligible to apply to the degree programme. The Degree Program in Live Performance Engineering uses entrance examinations for student selections.

Specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning

According to the Degree Regulations of Metropolia University of Applied Sciences students may apply for identification and accreditation of prior learning as part of their compulsory or optional studies, provided they have prior learning corresponding to the curriculum before the course in question begins.

Profile of the programme

The degree program in live performance engineering acts a courageous reformer regarding multiskilled expertise and also as a responsible developer of expertise. The Bachelors of Arts in live performance engineering master the systems in lighting, sound, audiovisual and stage engineering in a versatile way. The graduates work in a wide range of professional technical tasks as parts of artistic groups and production organizations. The work tasks are executed mainly at theatre and opera houses, cultural and community centers, in live performance production and planning, concert and festival activities and international live performance productions, production planning agencies as well as sales and installation related activities.

The graduates in the field are constantly ready to acquire skills in new technological applications and meet the challenges posed by new production models and forms of performance.
Planning and building reliable and secure systems to meet the needs of performances, fluently operating the equipment and fast problem solving are commonplace for them. The graduates are functioning in an innovative and creative way in the rapidly developing environment in live performance engineering and can develop operating environments in the field of performing arts.

Key learning outcomes

The studies accentuate multi-skilled competencies in the field as well as production related skills. The core competencies include systems in lighting, sound, video and stage engineering, skills in continuous learning, safety, competence in the field of performing arts and event production, teamworking skills in a variety of technical and artistic work groups as well as supervisory skills and project and interpersonal skills at work communities.

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples

The graduates in the field work in the multifaceted technical professional tasks in performance productions as a part of artistic groups and production organizations. The tasks take place at theatres and opera houses, theatre companies, cultural and community centers, live performance and event production agencies, concert and festival activities and international live performance productions, production planning agencies as well as sales and installation related activities.

Access to further studies

Graduates are eligible to apply for admission in a Master’s degree programme at a university.

Examination regulations, assessment and grading

According to the Degree Regulations of Metropolia University of Applied Sciences course assessment criteria are specified in the course implementation plan. The teacher in charge of the course will be responsible for the assessment. At the beginning of the course students must be informed on the assessment principles which must be based on the course objectives. Assessment takes primarily place for each course and applies to the students who have registered and been accepted on the course. If necessary, different components of a course may be assessed individually. If the course consists of several components, the teacher may point this out in the assessment principles contained in the implementation plan.

The assessment scale is as follows: excellent (5), very good (4), good (3), very satisfactory (2), satisfactory (1), fail (0) and pass (P). Any deviations of this scale will be decided by the President.

Graduation requirements

The student has completed all the studies included in the degree curriculum within a time period defined by the Metropolia Degree Regulations.

Mode of study

The degree is offered as a full-time on-campus study programme as well as a combination of on-campus and off-campus study.

Workplacement(s) and Work-based Learning

The studies are implemented with diverse co-operation with working life. Studies include a 30 ECTS work placement which can also be divided in two 15 ECTS work placements.

Obligatory or Optional Mobility

Students have opportunities to participate student exchange and international work placement during 3rd and 4th years of the studies.
