Metropolia University of Applied Sciences provides education for polytechnic degrees, polytechnic master’s degrees, specialisation studies and other education.
The contents of education are described in the curriculum. The curricula in Metropolia are competence-based. Competence-based curricula define the competence targets and the learning outcomes of the degree and the studies. Competence targets indicate the kind of competence expected from each student. Learning outcomes indicate what the student knows, understands and is able to do as a result of the learning process.
The contents of the curricula are reviewed annually. Every student group beginning their studies each academic year has their own curriculum. The Study Guide presents the curriculum for the most recent student group.
The curriculum contains descriptions of all studies. The same course can be included in the curricula of different student groups and it can be organised several times, i.e. it has several implementations. All the implementations of a course are presented in the curriculum. Part of the contents of the course can change in different implementations (e.g. the language of instruction, teaching methods, evaluation methods, literature). The curriculum is designed so that the contents that remain the same from an implementation to another are always shown. The contents that possibly change from an academic year to another are explained separately in the description of each implementation.
The teacher of each course designs the implementation before the course begins. When finished planning, the teacher updates the detailed information for the course also in the curriculum. If the curriculum contains new courses that have not been organised before, information related to their implementation is not available before the teacher designs and confirms the details closer to the beginning of the course.
