The Media Department includes three degree programs - Film and Television, Live Performance Engineering & Media and Communication - where students follow individual learning paths. The core curriculum for media majors includes courses in academic and learning skills, languages, entrepreneurship and preparation for the final project. Then students follow the learning path of their major, but the structure of the curriculum and the timing of classes enable interdisciplinary courses and projects between them.
The starting point of the learning pathway is professional competencies. The main method is project-based learning, which enables close collaboration with industry partners. In addition to internships, the degrees include several industry-linked projects.
Students can do their internships in Finland or abroad, and the language courses are integrated with professional courses in order to support international and multicultural skills.
In their last year of study, students complete an independent industry-related project and write a research report on it. The final project may also include an artistic or practical project, performance or documentation. The project can be carried out by a group of two or more students.
Visual Communications students study the design of both printed and electronic media. The training consists of theory in visual expression and thinking, information about production processes in the graphic industry, the software used in making them, practical work in arts subjects and applied professional subjects, and basic information about commercial operations.
Students choose to specialize in either Graphic Design or Motion Graphics. In both choices, the student gets the basic skills of graphic design and the ability to design and implement marketing communication.
Upon graduation, the students can find employment in various visual communication positions, for example as graphic designer, art director (AD or junior AD), visual user interface designer, concept artist, illustrator, game artist or designer of business graphics. Workplace may be in design or communication agency, companies’ communications departments, game industry, media companies or in the advertising business.
