Koulutuksen kuvaus

Business Informatics is a Master’s degree programme for business professionals and practitioners who want to deepen their strategic and managerial expertise through improved information management and better use of business intelligence systems.

In addition to a strong business management and business development core (30 ECTS), this Master’s degree program in Business Informatics offers a deeper insight into business management areas such as management accounting, modern marketing, or logistics, each linked to corresponding ICT systems (20 ECTS). The student will become a competent analyzer and user of business intelligence in decision-making, in business operations, as well as in business development. Electives (10 ECTS) bring an individualized touch to the learning scheme.

The Master’s Degree Programme in Business Informatics consists of
- Advanced Professional Studies, 30 ECTS
- Alternative Advanced Professional Studies, 20 ECTS from a set of choices
- Elective Studies 10 ECTS
- Master’s Thesis 30 ECTS

Each student plans and implements a research & development project in/for real business life, typically for their work organization. In doing so, the student’s research, development, project as well as change management skills will be enhanced. Networking, team skills and negotiation skills also improve in the multi-cultural, tied-to-business setting in which this Master’s DP is carried out. The R&D project will be reported as a Master’s Thesis (30 ECTS).

When studying on a part-time basis, the student can achieve the Master’s degree in two years. Contact sessions take place on Fridays, approximately twice a month. Thursday evenings and occasional Saturday workshops may be needed, especially for the Master’s Thesis process. Various forms of e-learning will also be applied. The language of instruction is English.

Pedagogiset toimintatavat

The curriculum work was done in cooperation with business companies and consultants, and as a joint effort of the Business School and the School of ICT of Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. This resulted in two “sister programmes”, both titled as Master’s degree programmes in Business Informatics: We have a 60 ECTS programme leading to the degree Master of Engineering and a 90 ECTS programme leading to the degree Master of Business Administration. The Advisory Board of the Business School of Helsinki Metropolia UAS approved of the curriculum (February 2011). The first three years have not brought up needs for making changes to the curriculum. As for the 2015 Curriculum, the marketing module has been updated thanks to increasing digitalization. Also the Master’s Thesis process has been renewed: there is closer interaction with and integration to the methodology courses in order to get the Master’s Thesis started early enough to reach measurable results during the study time. The Master’s students themselves, as well as the Business Informatics alumni, represent a significant source of insight into curriculum development, which is appreciated. Also, the team of Principal and Senior Lecturers from two competence centers of Metropolia participates actively in continuous development.

International partners of Metropolia offer suitable ways of collaboration for adult students studying part-time. Two partner universities in Berlin, a partner university in Daegu, South Korea, as well as partners in Turkey, and Canada, are among those with whom we provide internationalization opportunities for Master’s students.
